A urogynecological physiotherapist is a specialist who deals with urinary and reproductive system conditions that are more common in women than men. This is actually a completely new field of physiotherapy , which, among other things, aims to complement the work of a gynecologist and help women navigate the difficult period of pregnancy.
However, that's not all. The scope of activities of a urogynecological physiotherapist is much broader, but not everyone is aware of it yet.
What does a urogynecological physiotherapist do?
As the name suggests, a physiotherapist specializes in urogynecological physiotherapy treatments dedicated to women.
Urogynecological physiotherapy includes prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor muscle complaints, using safe and painless methods combined with physiotherapy techniques.
Its aim is to prevent or treat problems in urology, gynecology, proctology and sexology. Therefore, every woman can make an appointment with a urogynecological physiotherapist to learn how to take care of the proper hygiene of intimate areas, genitals and the urinary system, the condition of the pelvic muscles, and how to plan a pregnancy.
What is urogynecological physiotherapy?
Typically, pelvic floor dysfunctions are related to too high or low muscle tension. Therefore, the urogynecological physiotherapist first analyzes the posture of the entire body, breathing pattern, spine condition and the work of selected muscles.
However, when it comes to analyzing the functioning of the pelvic floor muscles, it can be performed by transvaginal examination, but it is not always used. However, it allows us to select a therapy plan for a woman with extreme accuracy.
The process of urogynecological physiotherapy for women mainly involves proper breathing training during individually selected exercises, activation of abdominal muscles, massage, manual therapy or kinesiotaping (using special tapes on designated sections of the spine) and other physiotherapy treatments.
Thanks to this, women work on their posture and relaxation of the entire body, especially the pelvic floor muscles.
In what problems can you turn to a urological physiotherapist?
Women can consult a urogynecological physiotherapist for the following diseases and conditions:
- incontinence of urine, stool, gas or pollakiuria,
- lowering of the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus and rectum
- birth,
- ailments related to pregnancy,
- in the recovery period after childbirth (puerperium),
- scar after cesarean section,
- symptoms of symphysis pubis,
- painful menstruation
- the period of menopause,
- pain during intercourse.
Urogynecological physiotherapy as rehabilitation in pregnancy
Women have to deal with many problems during pregnancy, such as back pain, sciatica and leg swelling.
However, with appropriate women's rehabilitation , you can reduce pain and even prepare your body for childbirth.
Urogynecological physiotherapy provides the best results because it allows for complete control of the pelvic floor and abdomen, which in turn reduces the risk of complications.
Urogynecological physiotherapy during pregnancy focuses on non-invasive exercises that prepare the pelvic floor muscles for the stress they will experience at the time of delivery.
Physiotherapists use kinesiology tape for most exercises , as it relieves pressure on specific areas of the spine. It's worth noting that this type of rehabilitation helps properly position the uterus, learn proper breathing rhythm before labor, avoid perineal tearing, and, above all, help you get back in shape faster after childbirth.
In other words, urogynecological physiotherapy allows you to take care not only of your health, but also of your baby.
